MEET OUR FASTERS

Kristi Richards, Cashier, Grand California
I’m fasting to stand up for my co-workers who have been injured or fallen ill at work. I worked with and knew Musa Sharaf, a cook in the Storytellers Restaurant, who had a heart attack, hit his head and died while at work. No one knows for sure what caused his heart attack, but what we do know is that we are under a lot of stress, especially cooks like Musa. The pressure that the company is putting on the workers must stop.

Antonia Castro, Cook, Disneyland Hotel
I support my co-workers. I’ve worked in several departments and in many departments I’ve witnessed injustice and abuse. The problems we have with abuse must stop. We are the union and we can bring real change.

Narciso Guevara, Houseman, Grand California
There are many reasons why I decided to take on this fast. The most important is because when I look around where I work, I realize we need more. We’re fighting for our health. We need to keep our healthcare and we need better, safer conditions on the job. Even more important, the company must respect us. We need to be treated like human beings. Right now, some of my co-workers feel very badly. We want the pressure in our workplace to stop. There is a proverb that says, "Nothing ever important happens in your life until you make it happen. "  Let’s make it happen.

Maria Navarro, Housekeeper, Grand California
In my job, we are scared. My co-workers are scared. I’m a single mom, and I don’t want others to have to go through what I’m going through. I was injured on the job. The managers put too much pressure on us, and many of my co-workers are afraid. There are many people in my department who are hurt, but work through the pain because they are afraid of losing their jobs. There is too much pressure – we must make it stop.

Ruben Flores, Laundry Host, Paradise Pier Hotel
I take my role as a leader very seriously. Many of my co-workers in the hotel are nervous and scared but want our problems to be resolved. They look to me in many cases for guidance. Because of this, I am leading by example. I am showing the company the seriousness of our situation.

Elpy Escobar, LAX
I am fasting because we must support each other. I haven’t necessarily experienced some of these injustices in my workplace, but I get angry when I hear that companies, companies like Disney that make so much money, try to take advantage of their workers. As a leader, I will lead by my example. We need to do something so loud and so powerful so the company sees this must stop

Ronald Martinez, LAX
Solidarity. I am fasting to stand as one with the Disney workers. We are all in one union. We have to face this issue together.

Eddie Carrington, Laundry Worker, Disneyland Hotel
I’m fasting to show the hotel that we have the strength to do this.  We need improvements in the hotel. We have to do something. We cannot be living without a contract and all the pressure. The pressure is worse now since our contract expired.
Richard Silva, son of Disney employee
My father works in shipping recieving in Disneyland and hurt his back last year after quickly trying to lift a box that was too heavy. He couldn't do on his own, and the injury left my dad on disability for two weeks. He had to go back to work in order to provide for our family, despite still feeling a lot of pain.  Throughout that period, my siblings and I were scared that my father might not be able to go back to work and we might have drop out of school to support our family. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.  So I'm fasting to bring attention to the difficulties that families face when a parent is injured and cannot work. I want no other family to have to worry that their children won't be able to continue school because of financial constraints.
Jorge Iniestra, Bellman, Disneyland Hotel
I've been with the company for 12 years, and the reason I am fasting is because this is the first tiem that I've felt threatened and worried that I might either not be able to afford, or, even worse, not qualify for healthcare. My wife and three kids depend on my healthcare, and I want to remind Disney that WE ARE PEOPLE, not just numbers.
