Based on a reader poll, the OC Register named the Disneyland hotel workers' fight for affordable health benefits the No. 9 Disney news story of 2009. From the OC Register:
Come next month, the conflict between the hotel workers’ union and Disney will be two years old.
In the past year, the contract dispute has escalated with two walkouts, about a dozen protests and threats that Disney was failing to prevent a swine flu outbreak. The dispute revolves around health care: The union, Unite Here, wants to keep its health-care program that has no contributions from employees. Disney wants the union to join the company plan, which requires employee contributions. About 92 percent of hotel workers rejected the contract proposal in August.
What’s next: The conflict could get worse before it gets better.
